Bosch, Conti, ZF, others drawn to booming market for driver-assistance tech

The auto industry’s adoption of driver-assistance systems is looking like a gold rush. This year, global sales of the radar, cameras, controllers and software used for the technology will total $10.6 billion, forecasts IHS Automotive analyst Jeremy Carlson. By 2020, Carlson expects that figure to double. That’s because automakers are introducing collision-avoidance technology on mass-market models. For example, Toyota Motor Corp. will offer driver assistance on all models by late 2016.

The technology adds a range of features to autos. For instance, vehicles can park themselves, stay in a lane and make emergency stops. Within a decade, technology planners expect the industry to combine these functions to create fully autonomous cars that can drive with little or no assistance from humans. The auto industry’s megasuppliers have taken notice. Six of the world’s 10 largest suppliers – Robert Bosch, Magna, Continental, Denso, Hyundai Mobis and ZF - have muscled into the segment.

‘Deep expertise’

Because automakers must integrate key safety functions such as steering, brakes, radar and cameras, Carlson said, they will tend to favor suppliers with “deep expertise in many areas of the vehicle,” i.e. megasuppliers.

Given the market opportunities, it’s no surprise that Bosch – the No. 1 company on Automotive News Europe’s list of the top 100 global suppliers -- has made driver assistance a top priority. During a May 20 press briefing in Germany, Bosch said its overall sales of driver-assistance components are rising by one-third annually. Bosch’s sales of radar and video sensors are expected to double this year, after doubling in 2014. While sales of radar and cameras won’t rise that fast indefinitely, Bosch and other suppliers expect another boost from lidar, which uses pulsed laser light to measure how far objects are from a vehicle.

Bosch, Conti, ZF, others drawn to booming market for driver-assistance tech

As automakers design vehicles that can change lanes automatically, they are likely to add lidar sensors for better obstacle detection. So Bosch is road-testing autonomous vehicles equipped with six lidar sensors, six radar units and one camera. “We want to have a 360-degree view around the vehicle, so now we are analyzing to see if this is the perfect solution,” said Belen Aranda Colas, director of Bosch’s automated driving project. To keep up, Bosch has assigned 2,000 engineers to develop this technology – 700 more than it had two years ago.

In 2014, ZF Friedrichshafen announced the $12.4 billion acquisition of TRW Automotive Holdings. The deal gave ZF access to sensors, brake controls, electric steering and driver-assistance software – the technological building blocks for autonomous cars. Meanwhile, airbag maker Autoliv has made several smaller acquisitions to gain the necessary technology. In 2008, the Swedish supplier bought Tyco Electronics, which made radar sensors. Autoliv subsequently purchased Visteon’s radar business, acquired a supplier of adaptive cruise control and licensed camera software from Hella.

Software specialists

While companies such as Bosch, Denso, Autoliv and Continental dominate the segment, there is still room for small suppliers that specialize in a particular technology -- especially software developers. Exhibit A is Mobileye, an Israeli firm that has developed obstacle-detection software for automakers. Last year, Mobileye reported total revenue of $143.6 million, a pittance compared with Bosch’s global sales of $44.2 billion. Yet Mobileye has lined up contracts with 13 automakers to develop obstacle-detection systems – up from eight last summer. The software makes sense of camera imagery, telling a car’s computer, for example, to brake for a pedestrian but ignore a flying bird or tumbling piece of paper.

Fiat Chrysler and Google owner Alphabet near self-driving cars deal, reports say
http://europe.autonews.com/article/2016 ... -cars-deal

Google has been testing self-driving cars in California.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Google owner Alphabet are close to agreeing a deal on a technology partnership for self-driving cars, multiple reports said.

The deal would start with Chrysler Pacifica minivans and could be announced as soon as today, Bloomberg reported, citing a source familiar with the discussions.

The talks between Fiat Chrysler and Alphabet's self-driving car division have been going on for several months, the Wall Street Journal reported, also citing a person familiar with the matter.

Alphabet has ambitions as an auto supplier and is offering is seeking to sell its self-driving car technology to automakers, the Journal said.

General Motors Co. talked to Google about developing and testing self-driving cars, but they were unable to come to a deal because of disagreements over ownership of the technology and data, Bloomberg reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.

Google has been testing self-driving cars in California and other U.S. states. Google's car-development executives have said they don't want to build cars themselves, the Journal reported.

If Fiat Chrysler and Alphabet come to a deal, it could mean that the automaker is willing to let Google develop the brains of self-driving cars and own the technology and data, while its assembly plants supply the manufacturing capacity.

Fiat Chrysler and Alphabet declined to comment.

Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said Tuesday that he hopes to have an arrangement with a technology company to announce this year. "I can't say anything up to now," he said on an analysts call on FCA's first-quarter results.

Marchionne has been directly involved in talks, Bloomberg sources said.

A deal could work for both companies, said Maryann Keller, an independent auto industry consultant. FCA can't afford to develop its own autonomous cars and an Internet company like Google wouldn't want to spend billions on factories, she said. "In effect what Google wants is a contract manufacturer," Keller said. "If any company would do this on terms that aren't acceptable to other carmakers, it's FCA."

Kelley Blue Book Managing Editor Matt DeLorenzo said in emailed comments that a tie-up with Google could put FCA, which lags behind competitors in Silicon Valley, "back into a leadership position when it comes to future tech, including autonomous vehicles."

Fiat Chrysler has been talking with many players outside of the industry about possible collaborations, as car technology has become a prime area of interest for Silicon Valley companies including Google.

In September, Google hired former Hyundai and Kia executive John Krafcik, a manufacturing expert and a fan of disruptive technology, from car-shopping service TrueCar to head its autonomous-car unit.

The Fiat Chrysler and Alphabet talks were first reported by industry blog AutoExtremist.com, which they said included development of an autonomous version of the new Pacifica minivan.
