Volvo announced today that sets new standards of safety and technology as the next generation of models will be equipped with cutting-edge LiDAR. These have been developed in collaboration with technology company Luminar, with this partnership offering Volvo's first fully autonomous technology for use on highways.

This technology paves the way for future developments in active safety and will be available in next-generation models based on Volvo's modular SPA2 platform. LiDAR will be available as hardware ready for stand-alone operation from early 2022, with Luminar LiDAR seamlessly integrated into the roof.

SPA2-based cars will receive over-the-air (OTA) software upgrades, and with the optional Highway Pilot system option, the car will be allowed to drive completely on the highway, and if verified to be safe for specific geographic locations and conditions.

In addition to Highway Pilot operation, Volvo and Luminar are also exploring the role of LiDAR in improving future advanced driver support systems (ADAS), with the ability to equip all SPA2-based cars with a LiDAR sensor.
