The big flop of the Renault Alaskan pickup

One year after its launch in Europe, the Renault Alaskan pickup has recorded 1,435 sales in the first half of the year, and only a little more than 2,000 in the world. Too expensive compared to the Nissan from which it derives, the Alaskan is far from the original target of 80 to 100,000 units per year.
A year after its launch in Europe, the Renault Alaskan pickup is flopped. Only 1435 units were sold in the first half of the year on the Old Continent, according to the internal statistics of the diamond manufacturer. We are nowhere near 24,000 Ford Ranger, the leader of the segment! Renault is scarcely 1.5% of the pick-up segment on the European market, just slightly more than the huge and voracious Dodge Ram imported from the United States by parallel circuits (1%)! The tricolor company is therefore very far from champion Ford (26.6%), Toyota Hilux (16.4%), Nissan Navara (15%), Mitsubishi L200 (12.2%). In France alone, Renault's domestic market, the Alaskan is also far behind its rivals: 560 registrations (over eight months), against 4057 for Ford, 2811 Toyota, 2066 Nissan, 1089 Isuzu D-Max, 1067 Volkswagen Amarok ... On the whole world, it's even worse! Barely 2095 Renault Alaskan were sold over six months, only a third of them outside Europe. A real Berezina. While, at the same time, Renault has sold only 18,000 Duster Oroch, a small pickup (much lighter than Alaskan), extrapolated from the Dacia Duster.
The Alaskan was presented with great fanfare in late June 2016 at a ceremony near Medellin in Colombia. It was initially reserved for the South American market. Produced at Nissan in Cuernavaca (Mexico) and also in Barcelona for Europe, the vehicle will also be manufactured from the second half of 2018 in a third factory, the Renault site in Cordoba (Argentina). The first tricolor projects date back to 2008. But, impossible for the diamond group to solve alone the economic equation. As a result, Renault has made it simple, stealing from the Japanese ally its Navara pickup known throughout the world.
90% of common rooms with Nissan
French pride, however, the 2.3 diesel (160 or 190 horsepower) from the Master van is however a pure Renault product, which also equips the Japanese version, before ending up under the hood of the Mercedes X class, which also derives from the model. Nissan. Alaskan and Navara share 90% of the components. Only "the hood, the wings, the front and rear, the wheels, the navigation system" differ from the Nissan brother, recognizes Laurens van den Acker, the style boss at Renault. The recipe was ultimately too simple! Why then buy a Nissan Renault, especially since the tricolor firm began with expensive versions with four doors? The range starts at 28,710 euros in France at Nissan, against 36,860 at Renault.
