The Dakar Rally is turning to hydrogen , since according to the organizing committee ASO (Amaury Sport Organization), in 2026 the top cars and trucks should be hydrogen-powered, while by 2030, all cars that will participate in the Dakar Rally will must have hydrogen engines.

The 2021 Dakar Rally will be held for the second consecutive year in Saudi Arabia. The race will start on January 3 from Jeddah, the country's second largest city on the west coast, with the checkered flag falling on January 15 in the same city after 12 day special stages and more than 4,767 kilometers of race. A day of rest is scheduled for January 9 in the town of Howell.

Given the nature of Saudi Arabia's territory, much of the race route will be characterized by dunes, as competitors will cross the Rub 'al Khali Desert.

This year, 321 vehicles have been declared to participate in the race. Of these, 124 are cars and SSVs, 108 motorcycles, 42 trucks, 21 quads and 26 "Dakar Classic"
