Mercedes close to breaking 1000bhp barrier with Formula 1 engine

Mercedes is close to to producing a Formula 1 engine that can deliver a power output of 1000bhp, according to its engine boss Andy Cowell.

Mercedes has dominated F1's V6 turbo hybrid era, clinching four successive double world championships.

Power unit development has been such that last year, Cowell said Mercedes had exceeded 900bhp and now says it is on course to break the 1000bhp barrier.

"We're close," Cowell told Autosport. "I'm sure that'll happen at some point."

This year, Mercedes' engine hit a landmark achievement on the dyno when it broke the 50% thermal efficiency barrier for the first time.

Its progress is thought to have made its M08 EQ Power+ the most efficient racing engine ever.



Thermal efficiency, which is calculated on the amount of useful energy that can be produced from a given amount of heat input, has become a key focus for modern engine builders.

In F1, it is particularly important because of the strict fuel-flow limit rate of 100kg/hour.

When asked how long it will take until 50% thermal efficiency is transferred from the dyno to the track, Cowell said: "It's an answer for the early part of the next year.

"We need to see how the power unit development goes through the winter and our prove-out goes through the winter, and it's a balance with the car as well.

"There are engines running on the dyno - that's one thing.

"When you go to total car lap time, that's the bit where there's work being done to improve the technology on the car to enhance both aerodynamic and power unit performance.

"Let's see how it all works out."

Mercedes' first turbo-hybrid engine, introduced in 2014, had an efficiency rate of 44%.

Treba da ukinu ove restriktivne termine...onda bi veliki timovi prestali da se glupiraju da imaju 2-3 tima da bi mogli da dobiju više podataka.

Znam da mozda nije najbolje mesto, ali za prave formulase ovo se must see emisije, ima jos dobrih iz serijala, ali ove su mi nekako najbolje sto se tice sadrzaja. U emisiji sa Bergerom ima i detalja o Senninom udesu, a generalno puno opste interesantnih detalja koga interesuje.

Williams choose Sirotkin over Kubica for final place on 2018 grid

Williams has selected Sergey Sirotkin as its second driver for the 2018 F1 season to partner Lance Stroll.

The team evaluated Sirotkin alongside Robert Kubica in Abu Dhabi last year as the team evaluated its options for this season.

“To say I’m happy and proud to join such a famous team like Williams is an understatement,” said Sirotkin.

“It took a huge amount of work to get where I am, and I’m really happy and thankful to everyone involved. The result of our combined efforts has helped me achieve my dream, and rest assured the team can rely on me to deliver my best.”

Williams chief technical officer Paddy Lowe said the team has “conducted a rigorous and exhaustive driver evaluation process.”

“Ultimately, Sergey impressed the team with his driving pace and talent, technical feedback and work ethic, both at the factory and trackside in Abu Dhabi,” said Lowe. “We have an exciting lineup for 2018 which we believe will help us to maximise the potential of the FW41,” he added.

Sirotkin first came to prominence in Formula One four years ago when he was linked with a drive at Sauber. The move never came off, though he made a single appearance for the team in the first practice session for Russia’s inaugural Grand Prix in 2014.

In 2016 he joined Renault’s young driver programme and has made a further six appearances in practice sessions over the last two years.

Sirotkin did not have a full-time drive in a series last year but his third-place finishes in the 2015 and 2016 GP2 championships mean he has more than the minimum required 40 superlicence points to step up to F1.

Williams’ announcement means all 20 race seats in the 2018 F1 field have been filled.

Bravo, bice srecni ako ne padnu za vise nego 2 pozicije ove godine sa skoro pa 2 debitanta. Uzeli su lovu umesto da uzmu iskusnijeg vozaca, mislim da su debelo pogresili, ali nece biti prvi put. A da, i Martinijev uslov od 25 godina starosti je prebrodjen.

Haas-Maserati deal would be good says Marchionne

Sergio Marchionne has repeated his hint that a deal between Haas and Maserati could be on the cards.

Last month, the Ferrari president sealed the deal on a title sponsorship between Fiat Chrysler brand Alfa Romeo and Sauber.

Now, Marchionne has his eyes on a similar tie-up, with talks between the Ferrari 'B team' Haas and Maserati said to be taking place.

Italian reporters asked him at the Detroit auto show if he is thinking about sending Maserati into Formula E.

"I'm not so sure. In terms of a possible cooperation, it is maybe better to try to organise a joint project with Haas in formula one," Marchionne answered.

"It would be a good project."

He also said the next step for Alfa Romeo could be a move into Indycar, in partnership with Dallara.

"We do not have much experience in American racing, but we are thinking about Indycar. Why not?" he said.

"Giampaolo Dallara is an excellent specialist and the best Italian engineer in the motor sport industry," Marchionne added.
