Details of the long rumored successor to the all conquering Ferrari Enzo have returned yet again. This time they come courtesy of a report by Autoweek that says power on the super-duper car will hit 920hp and it will be called the F70.

According to the report, the majority of the power will be generated by a 7.3-liter V12 power house that is a further development of the unit set to be employed in the F620 which will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

A total of 120 horsepower will also be derived from the kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) that is better known for its employment in Formula 1 cars. One thing that must be noted is that the KERS system only gives a power boost for a limited time until the energy is regenerated meaning the Enzo replacement will spend a great deal of time with just 800 horsepower available. It seems a little low, but with a low kerb weight and driving dynamics, it could be enough.

Talking of weight, the report also states it will set the scales to around 1134kg (2,500 lbs) which is a good dip on its predecessor that comes in at 1,365 kg (3,010 lbs).

If all rumors turn out to be accurate, the new F70 will battle the successor to the McLaren F1 and the Porsche 918.

Ferrari Enzo successor will be shown off later this year - report
WCF

Will be shown to high-profile clients
In a recent interview, Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo confirmed plans to unveil an Enzo successor later this year.

He declined to go into specifics, but told Automotive News the model would be shown to a few high-profile clients at a private event. It will eventually have a public debut at the North American International Auto Show or the Geneva Motor Show in 2013.

Little else is known about the supercar, but previous reports have suggested it will feature a 7.3-liter V12 engine and a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS). This could enable the model to have a combined output of 920 hp (686 kW / 933 PS).

Regardless of the final numbers, di Montezemolo hinted it will become the company's fastest and most powerful road car.

Ferrari shows next Enzo's HY-KERS V12 at 2012 Beijing motor show

Ferrari stole a surprise march at the 2012 Beijing auto show when it announced a few details about its forthcoming Enzo successor.

The powertrain you see here is essentially the hybrid supercar architecture which'll underpin the new hypercar being readied for launch later in 2012.

Ferrari chief Amadeo Felisa told CAR the electric powertrain would lop 10% off the 0-124mph time - and its V12 is related to that in the F12, but with more power and 40% lower CO2 emissions.
Ferrari's mid-engined HY-KERS system: the lowdown

This is not the first time we've seen Ferrari's HY-KERS system. At the 2010 Geneva motor show, Maranello rolled out a vettura laboratorio (experimental vehicle) which packed a hybrid powertrain inside a 599 GTB Fiorano.

That car was obviously front-engined. What's new in Beijing is that it's been switched to work in a mid-engined application. Hence the massive clue about what we'll see in the Enzo successor, the supercar aimed squarely at the McLaren P12.
What will power the next Ferrari Enzo?

Well, the HY-KERS project on show in Beijing is believed to be very close to what we'll find on Maranello's new hypercar, due to be unveiled in late 2012 before going on limited sale in 2013. Which points to a 12-cylinder engine, assisted by an electric motor and running a twin-clutch transmission. Lithium-ion batteries are slung low in the chassis - below the centre of gravity.

A second electric motor sits in front of the V12, dedicated to running the car's auxiliary systems (no mean power drag, when you consider the amount of power assistance and energy requirements on a big, hot V12 supercar).

'The objective of this configuration is to create a sports car that, thanks to the integration with the electric motors, increases power while at the same time reducing emissions,' says Ferrari. 'The KERS features new, smaller and lighter electronic components which come close to achieving the declared target of 1 KW per kg of extra weight added by the hybrid system.'
What does electric power mean at Ferrari?

More performance, naturally. The company won't reveal exact performance criteria yet, but says that performance is 10% greater than a supercar running just the V12 engine - yet emissions alone drop by 40%. Sounds like this is a very significant car indeed, pointing to the future for a brand like Ferrari who may otherwise become a carbon-riddled dinosaur.

Naturally, Ferrari makes great play over how its F1 experience has fed into the HY-KERS project. And this being Ferrari, it's not just about straight-line speed; it says that the electrification of the Ferrari supercar brings new possibilities to tweak handling dynamics, torque management and brake distribution.

So expect complex torque vectoring and pulses of e-power to make the next Enzo handle even better. Interestingly, Ferrari also runs the V12 at higher speeds than it needs to, as the internal combustion engine is more efficient at higher operating speeds; the extra energy is then stored in the ultra-thin lithium-ion batteries. Ferrari calls this Load Point Moving.
Over to Ferrari for the last word

'The HY-KERS’ electric motor delivers power using one of the gearbox’s two clutches and is mated to one of the two main shafts. The result is instantaneous, continuous power delivery between the electric motor and petrol engine.

'During braking, the electric motor acts as a generator, using the kinetic energy from the negative torque to recharge the batteries. This crucial task is managed by a dedicated ECU, also F1-derived, which not only controls the electric motor, but also governs the power to the auxiliary systems (power steering, brake servo, air conditioning, onboard systems).

'Work on the system has now reached the end of the experimental phase and the development phase will commence in the coming months.'

Ferrari Enzo Successor Test Mule

As Teamspeed reported a few months ago - Ferrari has been extremely tight-lipped regarding the successor to the legendary Ferrari Enzo, but as luck would have it our spies have caught this test mule out and about. Our sources tell us that this is not the real prototype but just a rolling test bed for key components, but never the less we're excited.

Key highlights are the flat front nose and rising rear wings which resemble the 458's, however, the vehicle is much wider. Just like a true test mule, the vehicle is sporting makeshift light assemblies and perhaps many other components donated by other Ferrari models. However, if does appear that this test mule is a stretched and widened 458 with a horrific amount of camouflage.

Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa revealed to British magazine Autocar at the 2012 Beijing show that his firm had to adopt hybrid technology as it is “the only way to meet CO2 emissions regulations, we can’t do it simply with weight reduction”.

The HY-KERS system will make the new Enzo the cleanest and fastest Ferrari in the range. Total power is likely to be near 1000bhp.

"Compensating for the weight of the system was the hardest challenge", according to Felisa, but the Italian maker has managed to retain "the necessary centre of gravity and weight balance".

The Kerb weight will be similar to the track-only Ferrari FXX with a figure of around 1157 kg. It will be achieved with the lightweight carbon fiber body while the chassis will be dominated by aluminum.

Codenamed the F70, the new super car has specs that should easily allow it to surpass the performance of its predecessor and engineers are reportedly aiming to exceed the all conquering Bugatti Veyron. This means we could expect to see a 0-100 km/h time of less than 2.5 seconds and perhaps a top speed in excess of 408 km/h. Rumors suggest the F70 will be shown to select Ferrari clients later this year before a full public debut is conducted in Geneva in March 2013.
