Lamborghini Diablo SV Roadster you didn't know existed

The Diablo was the poster child of many a room in the 90s as many, myself included, considered it to be the last true Lamborghini . Doors that open upwards, a shape from another planet and a real beast engine, especially for the time it came out, were some features that made it take root in the dreams of many.

In September 1998, Lamborghini passed into the hands of the Volkswagen Group , through Audi , due to the former's financial difficulties, and the rest is history.

One of the first "new" models to come out of Sant'Agata after its acquisition by the German company was the SV version of the Diablo Roadster. The Diablo SV Roadster was to be priced lower than the Diablo VT Roadster, just as the Diablo SV was the "least expensive" Diablo in the lineup at the time. This meant that the Diablo SV Roadster would slot in between the Diablo SV and Diablo VT, since for some odd reason the rear-wheel-drive Diablo had been discontinued for the 1999 production year.

The Diablo SV Roadster was just like the closed, a stripped down version of the VT Roadster, with simplified suspension geometry, but electronically controlled suspension was still available as an option. Also, the rear spoiler was not standard and remained a fairly expensive option, available in either body color or exposed carbon.

The Diablo SV Roadster was introduced at the 1998 Geneva Motor Show, but shortly after its introduction, Audi management decided not to put it into production, even though there were already several orders from the company's US importer.

The Diablo SV Roadster never went into mass production, as all rear-wheel drive versions were cancelled. However, the factory built a few prototypes, even with the redesigned 1999 headlights, without the pop-up lamps.

Some sources state that only 6 Diablo SV Roadsters left the factory, two of which were right-hand drive, one of which was severely damaged during an accident. Diablo SV Roadsters were based on 1999 spec models, and only one orange and the pictured yellow were 1998 models.

Lamborghini's American importer, however, built a few SV Roadsters themselves in the United States doing exactly what the factory would have done.

More specifically, remove the front drive shaft, front differential, and front axles, lightening a Diablo VT Roadster by about 115 pounds to 1,530 pounds, and according to the folks who drove these modified Diablo VT Roadsters, the Diablo SV Roadster it was really fun to drive.

Mechanically, under the hood was the magnificent 5.7-liter V12 engine with 530 hp at 7,100 rpm. and 605 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm, which was combined with a noisier exhaust system and a five-speed manual gearbox. For 0-100 km/h it needed 3.8 seconds, with the final reaching 335 km/h.
