This Mercedes Benz G-Wagen, affectionately named Otto, has carried Gunther Holtorf and his wife Christine on an incredible 500,000 mile journey around the world.

In 1989, Gunther Holtorf and his wife Christine climbed aboard their 1988 Mercedes Benz G-Wagen to travel from Germany to Africa, where they planned to complete a once-in-a-lifetime road trip that would last 18-months.

Except the trip didn’t last 18-months, it has lasted 23 years, spanned more than 200 countries and the G-Wagen now has 800,000 kilometers, or 500,000 miles, on its odometer. That’s the equivalent of 20 times around the equator.

The trio have visited everywhere from Alaska to Zimbabwe by way of North Korea, the Sahara desert, Mount Everest and Siberia in an effort to drive around the globe. Sadly, Gunther’s wife Christine passed away in 2010, but he has continued to travel the world, as per her wishes.

In June this year, the Philippines became the 200th country visited, and the G-Wagen showed 799,783 kilometers on the clock.

At 74-years old, Gunther Holtorf is an inspiration, but for all his and Christine’s determination, they couldn’t have done it without Otto — the name given to their trusty G-Wagen.

Powered by a 3.0 liter diesel engine, which produced around 85 horsepower when new, the 300GD was never fast, but it is very, very strong. Quite apart from reaching 500,000 miles, Gunther’s G-Class is continuously overweight, as he carries 500 kilograms (1100 pounds) of equipment on the roof, plus the car is his home — meaning it contains everything he needs to survive, from sleeping quarters to a shower.

He estimates the total laden weight to be 3,300 kilograms, or 7,275 pounds. Its style is also a far cry from many modern G-Class’s too.

As reliable as the car is, things can go wrong, and more than half of that extra weight on the roof is made up of hard-to-find, genuine Mercedes spares, all of which he fits himself when the need arises.

When another 100,000 kilometers is about to pass, Otto returns to a Mercedes dealer in Europe, where the instrument binnacle is opened, and a new sixth digit is stuck next to the standard five-digit readout.

A 20-year old GPS unit, a traditional paper map and a diesel additive is about as technical as it gets, and don’t go looking for a website, Facebook page or Twitter feed on Gunther’s exploits either, as the adventure is strictly low-key.

Gunther Holtorf and his G-Wagen will finish their incredible journey next year, when the car will retire to the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

Kaze samo da je jeftinije nego da zivi u Evropi,a i to cisto sumnjam,racunajuci gorivo,odrzavanje i sve sto ide uz to :)
Izracunaj samo za gorivo koliko je para trebalo da se predje 800.000km... Neka trosi 15l,po da kazemo 1e litri,to je 120.000e samo za gorivo...
Pa gde je odrzavanje tog Dzipa,gde mora da se radi servis barem na 20.000km,ako ne i cesce,pa popravke koje sigurno nisu retke na takvom terenu,troskovi zivljenja za 23 godine...
Verovatno su prodali neku vilu u Nemackoj za par miliona,pa ih boleo stojko :)

To gorivo je potrošeno za 20 i kusur godina. Kupovano je po raznim cenama uključujući bagatelne cene po Aziji i Africi.
Cenu ovakvog poduhvata je nemoguće izračunati, ali je sigurno daleko manja nego što predpostavljaš.

Inače putovanja "oko sveta" su postala jako raširena i napravila su posebnu industriju gradnje specijalizovanih vozila. Evo nekoliko primera G-wagena.

But the AMG G isn't about rational judgments. For proof, there's also a G65. It packs the bi-turbo V12, making 612bhp and 737lb ft. It won't be sold in Britain, but elsewhere it's double the price of the G63 - even though it's just 0.1 of a second quicker to 62mph. That makes it the most expensive Mercedes of all. And yet it's sold out for the next two years...

A G inace mi je ok, ne vidim situaciju u kojoj bih ga kupio i da imam brdo para. Za offroad bi pre uzeo neki defender, a za svakodnevnu voznju neki ML ili X5. :)
Koji crni defender da se poredi sa G klasom? To je nemoguce porediti.. Jedina sto cena novog G350 ide preko 80000e kod nas.. Ali mercedes koji najbolje cuva cenu. Vredi svaki euro

Pa nemoguce je porediti, kada je defender pravi radni konj, a u pola cene manje od G klase i bolji offroader. :kezo:

Ovo 6x6 AMG čudo je potpuno iživljavanje za šeike i braću im kad idu u lov jastrebovima. Upotrebna vrednost je debelo uništena ubacivanjem benzinca koji srče 800l. Da je ostao dizel bio bi ozbiljna osnova za razne nadgradnje.

Meni jedan od najboljih off road vozila, da imam mogucnosti vrlo rado bih ga posedovao. Zavidim ovom matorom Nemcu :) Matori ima dara za fotografiju, pogledajte fotografije gde je sve isao sa svojom G-klassom :klanjamse:

Pa ono,kazu 18l prosek... Neka bude i 25... 110l rezervoar,sta je tu neupotrebno? :D
Za Hummera 2 koji trosi 30l minimum je stedisa :) Za Hummera keca da i ne pricamo :)

Ima 3.75 tone,ide do 100 za 6s :) Ne znam kako bi se 3.0 dizel nosio sa tolikom tezinom,a jos kada se dodatno optereti sa 1 tonom,ne bih imao poverenja u mali motor...
U ostalom,sa ovom cenom(oko 300.000e),mislim da se gadjaju veoma retki ljudi/firme kojima ovo moze da bude korisno :)
A i oni seici sto ce da ga kupe da se izivljavaju pustinjom :D
