Rüsselsheim. Exactly 50 years ago the Opel Commodore took command with 115 hp 2.5- liter straight-six engine. A GS version with twin carburetors and 130 hp followed one year later. Opel is celebrating the 50th anniversary by entering four cars from the Commodore A, B and C generations in the 20th Silvretta Classic (July 6-8). Brand ambassador and Le Mans 24 Hours winner, Joachim Winkelhock will lead the Opel Classic team on the vintage rally through Montafon, driving a 1972 Commodore B GS/E (Grand Sport/Einspritzung) with 190 hp. A new Insignia Grand Sport will accompany the historic Commodores, continuing the tradition of the GS-name.

The start and finish of each of the three legs of the rally is in Partenen. The route winds through the Austrian Alps for three days, a distance totaling 600 kilometers. The highlights for spectators and participants alike are the Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse with the 2,037- meter high Bieler Höhe; the ascent to Piller Höhe on day two (lunch as of 12.00 p.m. at the Hotel Weißseespitze); the Furkajoch with a stop at Hotel Waliser Stuben (July 8, 12.00 p.m.); and the “Grosser Preis von Vandans” as the spectacular finale on Saturday as of 2.00 p.m.
