Fiat Sells Out Entire U.S. Production of 2012MY Abarth 500 in a Little Over a Month



If you were eyeing the new 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth, it looks like you are out of luck, at least for the next few months, as the Chrysler Group told its dealers today that it is no longer accepting wholesale orders for the $22,000 sporty mini car, according to a report from Detroit News citing company sources.

The report said that those placing orders now will be put on a waiting list for the 2013MY Abarth 500, which is expected to begin arriving in dealerships later in the fall.

The high-performance version of the Fiat 500 went on sale in the States at the end of April, at which point, the company had already received cash deposits from more than a thousand customers, covering the entire production for the model year.

The Fiat-Chrysler alliance then increased production at the company's factory in Toluca, Mexico to its full capacity at 3,000 units, though that number doesn't seem to satisfy the demand.

Earlier today, Chrysler Group LLC CEO Sergio Marchionne and Tim Kuniskis, Head of Fiat Brand North America, visited Fiat of Austin to congratulate the dealership for becoming the first Fiat studio in the country to sell more than 100 Fiat 500s in any given month.

During his speech at the event, Kuniskis admitted that Fiat received more orders than it had originally planned to build.

"The Fiat 500 Abarth is unstoppable," said Kuniskis. "Dealer orders for the Abarth dramatically exceeded the number of units we had scheduled for production. We had to schedule additional production to try and keep up with the demand. Most Abarth units are sold within one day."

Toyota Warns Scion Dealers Of Ill-Fitting FR-S Body Panels

Not long after its spring debut, the Scion FR-S is already facing quality issues. Last month, Scion issed two "tech tips" for the Scion FR-S: one for tail lamps with moisture in them and the other for potentially ill-fitting body panels.

The tech tips, dated May 2012, read as follows:
- Some 2013 Scion FR-S vehicles may exhibit a condition where the rear combination lamps appear to have moisture on the inside of the plastic lens.
- Some 2013 Scion FR-S vehicles may exhibit a condition where body panel fitting may not meet customer expectations.

So far, there's not much information available about the two tech tips, although some chatter has begun to pop up on FT86club.com, a forum dedicated to the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT 86. There's one post taking note of the body panel tech tip bulletin, but no one there reported any body panel problems.

The moisture-in-tail lamps issue seems to be ongoing as multiple owners reported it on the forum.



We reached out to Craig Taguchi from Scion's PR Department, and he told us that the company's L.A. customer call center hasn't received any complaints. He said that about 1,000 FR-S cars, which are built at a Fuji Heavy Industries factory in Gunma, Japan, have been sold since they officially went on sale June 1.


"We just want to be ahead of anything that might be an issue," he said. "So far, so good. Everyone seems to be happy with their FR-S."
