Mazda and Isuzu announce pick-up truck collaboration

Mazda has officially announced that it will enter an agreement with Isuzu on a pick-up truck collaboration. As part of the agreement, Isuzu will produce next-generation pick-up trucks for Mazda, based on Isuzu’s pick-up truck model.

Both companies have yet to provide further details on its collaboration, except that the model will be produced by Isuzu for Mazda, with a worldwide sales area (except North America). The new model is said to enhance Isuzu’s product competitiveness, while bolstering Mazda’s product line-up.

“Mazda and Isuzu have developed a collaborative relationship for more than 10 years, with Isuzu producing for Mazda trucks for the Japanese market. This agreement reinforces the continuous long-term relationship between Mazda and Isuzu,” both companies said in a joint press statement.

However, it is yet unknown if a next-gen Mazda BT-50 based on the Isuzu D-Max will be the end result of this collaboration. A more likely scenario is Isuzu continuing to supply new Isuzu N-Series (or Elf) light-duty trucks to Mazda on an OEM-basis, rebadged as the Mazda Titan.

Previous reports have indicated that the next-generation BT-50 will instead be based on the Toyota Hilux, as both companies have entered an agreement to build a mutually beneficial long-term partnership back in May 2015. Currently, the Mazda BT-50 is based on the Ford Ranger T6 and both are built at the AutoAlliance plant in Thailand.
