The biggest redesign in the history of the S-Class is in the works. More than 50% of the vehicle (approximately 2,700 components) have been modified or revised for this purpose.
It is the first model with a combustion engine to be integrated with the Mercedes-Benz operating system (MB. OS) . This new electronic architecture connects everything from infotainment and driver assistance systems to the powertrain in a single ecosystem.
• Engines: The V8 is still available; the M 177 Evo in the S 580 4MATIC delivers 537 hp and 750 Nm of torque, 11 hp and 50 Nm more than before. On the S 450 and S 500, the six-cylinder petrol engine (M 256 Evo) sees its torque increase to 600 Nm. Noise and vibration are reduced on all engines.
• The plug-in hybrids will retain an electric range of more than 100 kilometres, but will integrate the revised six-cylinder engine as well as a more powerful electric motor. The cumulative power will increase to 55 kW; The final figures have not yet been communicated.
• The diesel versions are equipped with the OM 656 Evo in-line six-cylinder engine, borrowed from the S 350d. The S 450d is the first production diesel car to incorporate an electrically heated catalytic converter, thus meeting the strictest emission standards. All engines are mild hybrids thanks to a 48-volt integrated starter-generator (ISG).
• Chassis: The standard air suspension and the optional E-Active Body Control system now include a new function: "Intelligent Damping". This system detects, for example, speed bumps and electronically adjusts the damping just before they appear. This feature uses data from the Car-to-X cloud to anticipate road surface irregularities. Rear-wheel steering is now standard (4.5 degrees), with a steering angle of 10 degrees still available as an option, reducing the turning radius of the long-wheelbase version by almost two metres.
