According to Auto Express, sources in Japan claim that Honda intends to implement both car and motorcycle technologies towards creating a front-wheel drive, sports coupe as a possible successor for the long-departed S2000. This reborn coupe will be based on the current gasoline-electric CR-Z platform, but is expected to have a smaller body and shorter overhangs. Styling cues will derive from Honda’s OSM concept car (pictured above).
Most excitingly, the next generation Beat will incorporate some of Honda’s cutting edge technology. Engine specifics remain unclear, but either or both the 1.3L and 1.5L advanced VTECs are likely candidates to be offered to an eager public.
Auto Express claims that a Beat hybrid is unlikely, but eco-conscious and penny-pinching consumers can remain calm because stop-start engine mechanics will probably make it to production. The 2013 Beat looks to borrow an adapted Honda VFR1200F motorcycle transmission. Yes, this little sportster will employ the company’s first ever dual-clutch transmission for cars.
Honda has been out of the topless sport coupe for several years now, leaving the market wide open to Mazda, Ford, and the like. Finally, Honda is talking about reclaiming their spot among affordable mid-life-crisismobiles—but don’t worry about cashing in your 401(k). This next generation S2000 is expected to hit dealerships in late 2013 and pricing appears to start in the upper $20,000 range to the lower $30,000s. The Beat is expected to be offered internationally.
