Mercedes Benz R-Class Withdrawn from US Market

According to a Yahoo Autos report, Mercedes Benz USA has confirmed the 2012 R-Class will be the last one produced for the US market. The German automaker has only managed to sell 300 of these wagon-SUVs this year in America, and Christian Bokich says the R-Class sales have decreased “to the extent that we can no longer make the business case for continuing to offer the R-Class.”
We’ll remind you that the R350 4Matic starts at $52,690 (not including transportation) and comes with a 3.5-liter V6 mated to a seven-speed automatic, while the R350 BlueTec diesel is $53,840, being equipped with a 210 hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel.

Datsun, ponovo među nama.
Nissan resurrects Datsun brand for emerging markets

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn announced today the Datsun brand will return with sales starting in emerging markets such as India, Indonesia, and Russia from 2014. The new Datsun logo was also revealed.
Datsun was the name under which Nissan operated until adopting its current name back in the 1980s. The revived name is Nissan's third global brand alongside Nissan and Infiniti.
The new plan represents an investment of 33 billion Japanese yen in expanding its production at Nissan's Cikampek plant, located 80 kilometers outside of Jakarta. Total capacity will increase to 250,000 annually by 2014, with the workforce expanding to 3,300, and sales outlets are planned to increase to 150 by 2015.
"Nissan is bringing new jobs and new vehicles to Indonesia," said Ghosn at a media event. "We are going to expand our production capability and offer a new and exciting product line here."

VW loses court fight against Suzuki over GTI brand
German carmaker Volkswagen has lost a European Union court battle against Japanese auto producer Suzuki over the latter's use of the GTI brand. Suzuki is allowed to keep its SWIFT GTi.
Japanese compact car specialist Suzuki beat rival Volkswagen of Germany on Wednesday when the European Court of Justice ruled that Suzuki's use of the GTI brand did not violate international trademark regulations.
Back in 2003, the EU Trademark Office accepted the Japanese auto maker's application to register its SWIFT GTi brand despite VW's claim that GTI was largely associated with the Wolfsburg-based firm's Golf GTI series, prompting the German carmaker to appeal the decision.
But the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg found there was no risk whatsoever of confusing VW's and Suzuki's grand turismo injection models, with GTI normally being used to characterize a sporty car with a highly efficient injection engine.
"Risks of any visual, phonetic or conceptual similarity between the marks at issue are largely compensated or even entirely countered by the fact that in Suzuki's case the GTI brand is registered alongside the model name SWIFT," the court said in a statement.
GTI brand widespread
The judges also cited widespread use of the initials GTI by numerous other car manufacturers throughout Europe, including Rover, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Peugeot and Toyota.
The use of the GTI brand is not the only bone of contention between Volkswagen and Suzuki which entered a strategic alliance in 2009 when VW bought a 19.89-percent stake in the Japanese carmaker.
The alliance was originally intended to help Volkswagen expand in India where Suzuki had experience and sales success.
But the partnership crumbled fast, and Suzuki initiated arbitration proceedings against the Volkswagen Group at the London-based International Chamber of Commerce in November of last year. It wants to force VW to sell back its stake completely.

GM Reportedly Closing Two Opel Plants
General Motors appears to be losing patience with its ailing European subsidiary Opel. According to media reports, the US carmaker plans to close up to two plants in Europe. Bochum in Germany and Ellesmere Port in Britain apparently top the list for the cuts.
The future of General Motors' European subsidiary Opel has been in doubt frequently in recent years. GM almost sold Opel in 2009 but backed away from the deal at the last moment.
Recently, however, there have been rumors of plant closures in Europe as a result of GM's frustration with mounting losses at Opel and its sister company Vauxhall. Now those plans appear to be taking concrete form. On Friday, the Wall Street Journal and the Reuters news agency both cited insiders saying that GM's Opel managers are planning to shutter to two plants in Europe.
Next Wednesday, Opel managers will present a business plan to the unit's board that apparently foresees the closure of two plants, reducing production capacity by 30 percent. According to the Wall Street Journal, the plans could be completed and made public within the next couple of weeks. The locations that are in greatest danger of closure are apparently Bochum in Germany, which has around 5,000 employees, and Ellesmere Port in the United Kingdom, which has 2,100 workers.
Reuters quoted a member of the supervisory board from the labor side as saying that GM had complained about an annual excess capacity of 500,000 cars, which translates into two plants too many. "The new head of manufacturing has been visiting one site after the other, playing them off against each other," said the unnamed board member. According to the source, the main points of the business plan to be presented next week are "plant closures and no growth of the company."
The news agency also quoted an unnamed GM source who said that no decision had been made on closing European plants, but that that market conditions in Europe were "pretty dire" and action had to be taken as a result.
Protected from Closures
GM's European operations, which consist of Opel and Britain's Vauxhall, made losses of almost $750 million (€570 million) in 2011. There have been repeated rumors in recent months that GM might want to sell Opel or close the Opel plant in Bochum.
But Opel is protected by an agreement that prevents any plant closures or lay-offs before 2014. The agreement was reached by management and unions two years ago in exchange for labor representatives agreeing to strict cost-cutting measures. A total of 8,000 jobs were cut at the time and the plant in Antwerp, Belgium, was closed.
In addition to the Bochum plant, Opel has facilities in Rüsselsheim, Eisenach and Kaiserslautern, employing a total of about 40,000 workers in Germany.
In 2009, General Motors had a deal in hand to sell its European unit. But at the last moment, despite months of negotiations facilitated by the German government, the American automaker backed away, deciding to restructure the company instead. The decision infuriated Berlin and led many in Germany to doubt the company's integrity.

Skoda Yeti II (nije Skoda Snowman-na bazi Tiguana)
The modular layout is lighter, stiffer and more efficient as well as about 20% cheaper to build.
The Yeti's distinctive design won't change dramatically, but it seems safe to expect a more grown-up vehicle with a wider track, a slightly longer wheelbase and a more modern appearance. Also in the works are improved engines (1.4 TSI with 150bhp and a 2.0 TDI boasting 177bhp), additional driver assistance systems and an extended Greenline range.
