Sony Xperia Z5 Premium
Sony's brand new top-end smartphone, the Xperia Z5 Premium, shares the majority of its specification with the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact. They were announced at the same time, but the Z5 Premium comes with one standout-feature: it's the first production smartphone to offer a 4K screen resolution. In combination with a 5.5-inch diagonal it offers an exorbitant pixel density of 806 ppi which, according to Sony, is great for watching 4K video content and viewing images.
In most other areas, including the camera, the Z5 Premium is more or less identical to the other new models. A 23MP 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS BSI CMOS sensor is combined with a F2.0 lens and dual-LED flash. A new hybrid AF system uses both contrast and phase detect methods and, according to Sony, can focus an image in only 0.03 seconds, which would make it the fastest AF system on any current smartphone camera. Improved sensor technology also leads to better low light performance and new camera app features include Touch Focus that lets you focus and capture an image at the same time by tapping the screen.
A Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 system chip, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of on-board storage are wrapped in a premium quality metal and glass body that, as in previous Xperia Z models, is water and dust proof. Storage is expandable by up to 200GB via microSD card and the fingerprint reader on the edge increases security and allows for mobile payments. Mobile photographers will especially appreciate the dedicated two-stage shutter button. The Xperia Z5 Premium will be available globally in November, though no details on pricing has been released yet. We are looking forward to get our hands on a device to test screen performance and find out what the new camera module is capable of.
