The BMW F10 5 Series will go out of production this October which means we’re less than a month away from the unveiling of the new model, codenamed G30. And while at first we’ll only get to see it via internet pictures, the car will be making its world premiere in Detroit, at the beginning of 2017. In the meantime, engineers and test pilots are putting together the final details, as 2017 BMW 5 Series models were spotted on the Nurburgring earlier this week.

This time, we’re taking a look at both the Sedan G30 version and the G31 Touring counterpart using what seem to be totally different powertrains. The Sedan sounds like it is powered by a powerful V8. That means we’re most likely looking at the upcoming BMW M550i, a new model that will be taking over as an intermediary between the 540i and the full-on M5.

The M Performance Automobile will be fitted with an upgraded version of the 4.4-liter V8 we’ve grown to love, making close to 500 HP and delivering enough performance to take on the likes of the Audi S6. By the looks of things, it will also have the suspension and brakes to do so, offering great performance for those not ready to embrace the M5. Most likely, we’ll also get to see it offered in both RWD and xDrive guises.

On the other hand, the Touring 5er shown here is as quiet as a mouse. That could indicate that we’re looking at a plug-in hybrid model, more precisely the 530e version. According to our sources, it won’t be using the same drivetrain as the 330e but instead it will have closer to 300 HP compared to the combined 252 HP the 3er currently has. Using a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine and an electric motor, the 530e PHEV will aim at an electric range of about 30 miles.

The new 5 Series will also take after the 7 Series in terms of design. Don’t expect big changes either on the outside or the inside as BMW will most likely be looking to enhance the current model rather than completely reshape it. A bump in material quality is expected while more technology will also be infused inside the mid-size sedan.
