PSA plans to end the deal between its British brand Vauxhall and Renault in vans, under which the Vauxhall Vivaro is manufactured on the basis of Renault Trafic in Luton, England, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.

Such a decision would be tantamount to tipping Vauxhall vans on a PSA architecture.

A source close to the Sochaux group told Reuters that PSA was planning to assemble in Luton its vans of equivalent size, Peugeot Expert and Citroen Jumpy.

A spokesman for PSA declined to comment.

In an effort to share development and production costs, car manufacturers have created a web of cross-subsidies in light commercial vehicles.

PSA also assembles a Toyota van on the basis of its Expert and Jumpy in its French factory in Sevelnord (North). Toyota replaced Fiat, which joined the Trafic platform produced at Renault in Sandouville (Seine-Maritime). Renault also assembles on this site some versions of the Opel Vivaro, as well as a Nissan van.

A PSA announcement is expected Wednesday in England.

Asked about the possible termination of the partnership in Luton, a Renault spokesman declined to comment. He did not wish to comment either the question of the future of the partnership between Renault and Opel concerning versions of the Vivaro produced in Sandouville.

Opel, whose models must gradually switch to PSA architectures, also uses the Renault plant in Batilly (Moselle) for its large Movano van, assembled on the same chain as the Renault Master or the Nissan NV400.

FRANKFURT -- Volkswagen and Ford are in preliminary talks over a development and production alliance for commercial transporter vans, two sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

Volkswagen's supervisory board gave its managers approval to strike a deal with Ford, two Germany-based sources said. Some preliminary talks have already been held, one of them said.

Volkswagen declined to comment on a possible alliance with Ford, but said: "As a leading automotive producer we consider various joint ventures with other companies across the globe."

Asked for comment on whether his company was in talks with VW, Ford CEO Jim Hackett said at an event in Detroit that “it’s premature to talk about that.”

Automakers across the globe are exploring ways to share expenses for developing light commercial vehicles, including electrified models, as cities from Paris to London to Shanghai push for models that will help them improve air quality. The tightening restrictions come at the same time that demand is rising for delivery of goods rising due to increasing popularity of online shopping.

VW had cooperated for years with Daimler to produce vans, but the German peer ended the joint project several years ago.

Eckhard Scholz, the head of VW’s light-commercial vehicle division, told Bloomberg News in October that the company was exploring ways to work together with other manufacturers. Evolving emissions rules were one factor prompting the talks, he said then.
