EU, Japan sign major trade deal in 'message against protectionism'

The deal signed in Tokyo is the largest ever negotiated by the EU and creates a massive free trade zone, eliminating tariffs for everything from Japanese cars to French cheese

Japan and the EU signed a sweeping free trade deal Tuesday saying they were sending a "clear message" against protectionism, as Washington puts up barriers and threatens a trade war.

The deal signed in Tokyo is the largest ever negotiated by the EU and creates a massive free trade zone, eliminating tariffs for everything from Japanese cars to French cheese.

It also provides a stark counterpoint to US President Donald Trump's aggressive "America First" protectionism, which has seen Washington impose trade tariffs on allies and rivals alike.

"We are sending a clear message that we stand together against protectionism," EU Council President Donald Tusk said after the agreement was signed.

Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker said the signatories of the agreement were making "a statement about free and fair trade, we are showing that we are stronger and better off when we work together".

Trump has unsettled America's allies and provoked the ire of its rivals with bombastic statements, hefty trade tariffs, and threats of a trade war.

Abe said the agreement "shows the world the unshaken political will of Japan and the EU to lead the world as the champions of free trade at a time when protectionism has spread".

Agreed last December, the deal is "the biggest ever negotiated by the European Union," according to Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas, and will create a free trade zone covering nearly a third of the world's GDP.

Under it, Japan will scrap almost all its tariffs on EU goods, particularly dairy items like cheese, though the country's rice industry will remain protected.

The EU will also eliminate about 99 percent of its tariffs on Japanese goods, including crucially removing levies on Japanese cars from the eighth year after the deal is implemented, and scrapping tariffs on car parts immediately.

- Taking aim at Trump -

The agreement must still be ratified by the EU parliament, as well as Japanese lawmakers, but is expected to enter into force from 2019.

The EU -- the world's biggest single market with 28 countries and 500 million people -- is trying to boost alliances in the face of Trump's protectionist administration.

On Sunday, the US president fuelled rising rancour by labelling the EU, along with Russia and China, "a foe" of the United States, and repeating his assertion that the EU has "really taken advantage of us on trade".

Without mentioning Trump by name, Tusk made sharply clear that the agreement was intended as a counterpoint to Washington's current trade policy.

"It's a light in the increasing darkness of international politics," Tusk said.

"We are sending a clear message that you can count on us, both Japan and the EU. We are predictable, responsible, and will continue defending a world order based on rules, freedom and transparency and common sense."

He dismissed concerns about the effect on small businesses, suggesting US trade policy was far more problematic.

"Political uncertainty, tariffs, aggressive rhetoric, unpredictability, irresponsibility, they are the real risks for our businesses, not trade deals," he said.

- United EU-Japan front -

The EU is seeking access to one of the world's richest markets, while Japan hopes to jump-start an economy that has struggled to find solid growth.

Junichi Sugawara, a senior research officer at Mizuho Research Institute, said Trump's protectionism had "prompted Japan and the EU to speed up negotiations on the deal".

Abe "has good relations with Trump, but in terms of trade, Japan has sided with the EU," he told AFP.

"Japan and the EU will form a united front against a US threat to impose tariffs on key products such as cars."

Talks last year closed the gap on most remaining issues between the EU and Japan, but a dispute resolution mechanism remains to be negotiated.

Tusk and Juncker arrived in Tokyo from Beijing, where they urged calm instead of "conflict" in international trade.

"It is the common duty of Europe and China, but also America and Russia, not to destroy (the global trade order) but to improve it, not to start trade wars which turned into hot conflicts so often in our history," Tusk said Monday in Beijing.

"There is still time to prevent conflict and chaos."

Abe had been scheduled to sign the deal in Brussels last week, but cancelled his trip after devastating floods that killed more than 220 people.

Volkswagen priprema Tri-turbo 2.0 TDI sa čak 272KS

"Kombinacija dva turbo punjača i električnog kompresora će omogućiti gotovo neverovatne performanse uz moment od 550 Nm i ispunjenje eko normi EU6d, koje dolaze 2021. Paralelno se razvija i automatski menjač DSG 10, s dvostrukim kvačilom i 10 stepeni.

Kad smo već pomislili da će zbog afere Dieselgate i sveopšte hajke na dizelske motore koncern iz Wolfsburga penzionisati slavne TDI motore, stiže demanti. Prvo je zvanično objavljeno da se uvodi nova generacija turbo dizelaša 2.0 TDI, a sada je ponovo aktuelizovano ono o čemu se 'šuškalo' već 2014.

Najavljuje se Tri-turbo 2.0 TDI, koji će iz 1968 ccm ispaljivati, ni manje ni više, nego okruglo 200 kW ili 272 KS. Još impresivniji je najavljeni obrtni moment od 550 Nm. To se planira postići kombinacijom dva turbo punjača i električnog kompresora (naziv je dakle svesno netačan, jer je 'zvučniji'), koji će dodatno 'boostati' moment i snagu pri niskim obrtajima.

Time će se specifična snaga dizelaša povećati na senzacionalnih 138,2 KS/l pa će nadmašiti 133,6 KS/l koliko ispaljuje dosadašnji rekorder BMW 750d xDrive. Uz izuzetne performanse, poboljšaće se ekološke karakteristike, pa će 'super-dizelaš' (ako i kada stigne) ispunjavati ekološke norme EU6d, koje se očekuju 2021.

Paralelno s uvođenjem über-dizelaša, Volkswagen, sa ZF-om, razvija i sledeću generaciju automatskog menjača DSG, s dvostrukim kvačilom, koji će broj stepeni prenosa povećati sa sedam na deset, a moći će da podnosi obrtne momente do 600 Nm.

Zanimljivo je da će novi automatski menjač DSG 10, uprkos povećanju broja stepeni, imati iste gabarite kao DSG 7, pa će moći da se ugrađuje u sve modele s poprečno postavljenim motorom, od Volkswagen Pola do Škode Superb, a omogućiće poboljšanje performansi, uz smanjenje potrošnje goriva i emisije štetnih gasova. Oba velika noviteta koncerna iz Wolfsburga se očekuju u tržišnim modelima u drugoj polovini 2020."

FCA will abandon the diesel on cars by 2021

The national and international emission limitations, in the various countries and in many municipalities, have led the FCA group to announce the decision to complete the production of diesel engines for cars by 2021 and to turn to electric and hybrid engines.

The plants concerned are mainly those of Termoli, Cento and Pratola Serra, which will have to be converted back to new productions.

For the moment, diesel engines are undergoing modifications. Fiat 500X 2019 will already adopt diesel with AdBlue to comply with new European regulations.

Commercial vehicles will also have hybrid and electric versions (Doblò, Ducato ...)

Renault-Nissan group grabs top spot in 1st half global auto sales

The Renault-Nissan alliance retained the crown as the world's largest auto seller in the January to June period for a second consecutive year, outselling major rivals Volkswagen and Toyota groups.

The alliance formed by Renault SA, Nissan Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. sold 5.54 million vehicles worldwide in the first six months of 2018, up 5 percent from the same period last year.

The figure outstripped the 5.52 million vehicles sold in the same term by the Volkswagen group, which grabbed the top spot in global sales for the second straight year in 2017. The group includes the Audi and Porsche brands.

Renault led the Franco-Japanese alliance's sales growth in the first half with a 9.8 percent rise to 2.07 million vehicles, while Mitsubishi Motors' worldwide sales climbed 24.8 percent to 616,650 vehicles.

Their solid figures more than offset a 1.4 percent fall in Nissan's sales to 2.85 million vehicles on a sluggish U.S. performance.

Under the three-way alliance, Renault holds a 43.4 percent stake in Nissan, which owns a 15 percent stake in Renault and 34 percent in Mitsubishi Motors.

Toyota Motor Corp. said that it and group automakers Daihatsu Motor Co. and Hino Motors Ltd. saw their combined global sales reach a record-high 5.21 million vehicles in the first half of the year, up 1.6 percent from a year earlier.

The Toyota group's overseas sales were up 3.6 percent to 4.04 million vehicles, backed by strong demand in the Chinese and European markets. But domestic sales fell 4.8 percent to about 1.17 million vehicles.
