Mazda RX-7 Returning In 2017
http://www.themotorreport.com.au/55336/ ... 7-yamamoto

Mazda will bring back the much-loved RX-7 in 2017, with less weight, less complexity and a greater emphasis on driver involvement.

Speaking to TMR at the local launch of the facelifted MX-5, Mazda Motor Corporation's sports car chief Nobuhiro Yamamoto said that the return of the RX-7 will mark 50 years since the introduction of Mazda's first rotary-engined car, the Cosmo Sport, in 1967.

By the time the next-generation model arrives, it will have been 15 years since the RX-7 departed Mazda showrooms.

Production of the FD3S RX-7 ended in 2002, with that model built purely for the Japanese domestic market. Local RX-7 imports ceased in 1998.

Yamamoto was the powertrain head for the FD3S, and has a lot of fond memories of that car. He was also involved in the RX-7's win at Bathurst in 1992 - the last time he'd set foot in Australia.

As you would expect, bringing back the RX-7 has been high on his agenda.

However Yamamoto stressed that the new model wouldn't quite follow the lead of the FD RX-7. Asked if the next-generation RX-7 will feature forced induction, Yamamoto replied "maybe not".

"At this time it has not been determined. Maybe later in life it will be turbo, but to start with maybe not," he said to TMR.

Instead, Yamamoto favours a naturally-aspirated development of the new 16X rotary engine, which was unveiled in 2007 but has yet to find its way into a production car.

Displacing 1.6 litres (the previous-generation rotary, the 13B/Renesis, only displaced 1.3 litres), Yamamoto says the 16X is capable of up to 300 metric horsepower (220kW) in a naturally-aspirated configuration.

Yamamoto added that, with the use of a special catalyst, the engine will have no problem meeting the ultra-restrictive Euro VI emissions legislation that will be in place by 2017.

As the man who designed the Le Mans-winning Mazda 787B's R26B rotary engine, which developed 700hp from just 2.6 litres, Yamamoto should know a thing or two about extracting the most from a rotary.

Key among Yamamoto's powertrain requirements was throttle responsiveness and linearity of power delivery.

He told TMR that the stepped power delivery of the FD RX-7's sequential twin-turbochargers was not ideal for a sports car and that a larger single turbocharger would result in too much throttle lag. Therefore, a naturally-aspirated rotary is the best solution.

But while 220kW might sound low compared to many other modern sports cars, Yamamoto says that the new RX-7 will be light enough to make the most of its power.

While he was coy about the RX-7's target weight, he said it "would definitely be lighter" than the 1310kg FD RX-7, and "probably around the weight of the Toyota 86" (1250kg).

Expected to be built atop a variation of the next-generation MX-5's platform, the new RX-7 will employ a range of weight-saving technologies to keep its mass down.

Yamamoto said that aluminium body panels will be used extensively, although more exotic materials like carbon fibre won't be due to their greater cost and more energy-intensive manufacturing processes.

It won't, however, be anywhere near as light as its MX-5 brother, which is expected to weigh around 1000kg when it debuts in 2014.

The RX-7 will also be noticeably larger than the MX-5, with a stretched wheelbase to accomodate a pair of small rear seats for the Japanese market.

As with the previous generation, the new RX-7 will be a two-seater in Western markets.

Yamamoto also told TMR that hybrid or EV powertrains were not suitable for a car like the RX-7.

He said that although KERS-like hybrid systems and all-electric powertrains were capable of delivering big torque, their smoothness and near-silent characteristics didn't deliver much in the way of driver enjoyment.

"For a pure sports car, it must be internal combustion," he said.

Yamamoto says that the RX-7 will be a premium product, and will likely wear a pricetag that's higher than cars like the 370Z.

Vesti vezane za pneumatike.

New EU Tyre Labeling System Comes into Effect, States Consumption, Wet Grip and Noise

It’s true that the current series of letters and numbers on the side walls of the tyres can be confusing to the average buyer, who relies on his tyre provider or a friend’s recommendation when the time comes to change his or her vehicle’s OEM rubber.

That’s why, effective November 1, a new labeling system has been introduced in the European Union. The goal is to inform consumers of the characteristics of each type of tyre and make driving more cost effective, quieter and safer.

The new labeling system is similar to that already used on white appliances. It has a scale from A to G, with A being the highest and G the lowest grade, and measures rolling resistance, wet grip and passing noise.

Industry specialists point out that, while these three labels may not be as thorough as those measured by tyre manufacturers, who take into account 50 criteria, they are a good start.

For example, the difference between a grade A and a grade G tyre in fuel consumption can be as big as 7.5 percent, while the stopping distance can be longer by as much as 18 meters. In the first case, the vehicle will pollute the environment much more over the lifetime of the tyres fitted and in the second, it can make the difference between involved in or avoiding an accident.

Juče se digla frka oko gašenja Lancie. Srećom, danas je to demantovano.

Marchionne plans to kill off Lancia
http://www.autoblog.com/2012/11/02/marc ... ff-lancia/

The European financial crisis has claimed another victim. This time it is not a racing program or production facility, but an entire car brand. Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has announced the shuttering of the storied Italian make as part of a "larger strategic correction" to right Fiat's current financial woes. That kind of dashes any plans for a Stratos comeback.

According to German site Automobilwoche, the move is part of a larger effort that would see Fiat spread product offerings over more vehicle segments, including the premium market. Still, Fiat will continue to present the Panda as the "pillar of the brand, and will be rebadged as a Jeep in the near future.

With news that Fiat could post a 700-million-euro loss for 2012, the killing–off of Lancia starts to come into context. According to Marchionne, the company may not break even again until 2015 or 2016. The hope of shuttering the Lancia brand is to further consolidate underpinnings and cut costs by platform sharing and rebadging of Fiat, Jeep, and Chrysler products, hopefully pulling the Italian automaker out of the red.

Lancia Lives, Most Models to be Built in North America
http://wot.motortrend.com/we-hear-fiat- ... 86589.html

UPDATE: Chrysler spokesman Scott Brown has told us that rumors that Lancia will be shut down are false. Lancia will continue on in Europe, with the Epsilon made in Italy, and the rest of its models built by Chrysler in North America.

“What was said by Marchionne is that Lancia Epsilon will continue to be made in Italy and the rest of Lancia portfolio will be developed together with the Chrysler Brand and those vehicles will be made in North America,” said Brown, “A development has been announced, NOT the end of Lancia.”

Lancia, the storied Italian automaker known for producing such enthusiast favorites as the Stratos, 037, and Delta Integrale, might be no more, according to German automotive news source Automobilwoche. That’s not all either. Rumor has it that Fiat will be reorganizing itself to better compete with Mini, and Jeep will be expanding its global reach.

The report comes out of a recent conference call Fiat and Chrysler chief Sergio Marchionne held in Europe. If true, the biggest change to Fiat’s operations would be the discontinuation of Lancia, which has been struggling in Europe for years — essentially dead weight to Fiat amid the current European economic struggles. The brand currently sells a mix of compact cars and rebadged Chryslers to European customers. “We must rid ourselves of the illusion that we can build [a]new Lancia,” Marchionne said in the conference call, according to Automobilwoche.

To plug the gap Lancia leaves in the Fiat lineup, Fiat would allegedly move Maserati slightly down-market and Alfa Romeo slightly upmarket so that the two brands would together cover the entire spectrum of the ever-important premium segment.

As for Fiat, it would reportedly team with Chrysler to provide a full spectrum of mainstream vehicles – Fiat would focus on small cars, anchored by the 500 and Panda, while Chrysler would focus on larger sedans. Fiat looks to already be on this path, with the 500L, a stretched four-door 500, and the 500X, a compact crossover. With the 500 lineup expanding, Fiat will be targeting BMW’s successful Mini brand.

Lastly, Fiat would leverage Jeep’s global appeal to expand the brand’s model range into smaller segments. The Jeeps at the forefront of this new plan would likely be the next-generation Liberty/Cherokee, and the 2014 Jeepster. Both models will be built on platforms shared with Alfa Romeo and Fiat, respectively, and would likely be built for the European market in Europe, especially considering the Jeep factory in Ohio is currently over capacity.

Netačni podaci o potrošnji goriva
Hyundai i KIA naneli su veliku štetu svom ugledu kada su u SAD deklarisali manje prosečne potrošnje goriva od stvarnih za neke od svojih modela.
