On optional air suspension the XC60 delivers a soft and supple ride the majority of the time, particularly at high speeds. Dial in the more comfortable of two settings (aptly labelled ‘Comfort’) and the XC60 positively wafts over soft-edged peaks and troughs, making it particularly adept for long stints on motorways.
Hit a sharp-edge ridge or a pothole, though, and all of a sudden that serenity is replaced by a loud jolt – bigger than you’d experience in an Audi Q5 or a Land Rover Discovery Sport. It’s a frustrating trait that restricts the XC60’s comfort spectrum and makes traversing a patchy town road mildly tiresome.
Mercifully, the standard fit steel suspension is a much better compromise for UK roads. There’s a pleasing aloofness from low-frequency lumps and bumps and body roll is consistent, controlled and reassuring. Expansion joints and larger potholes still send the odd thump through the cabin, but it’s less abrupt than with the more expensive air set-up. In short, we’d save the expense and stick to the standard springs.
