Rome (dpa) - Lancia cars will no longer be sold outside Italy, Fiat-Chrysler chief Sergio Marchionne said in an interview Friday in which he also announced that the merged group will acquire a new name.
"Lancia will become an Italian market-only brand," Marchionne told the La Repubblica newspaper, adding that its range would limit itself to the Ypsilon city car.
Founded in 1906, Lancia was once one of the most prestigious brands in the world, but has long been struggling. Fiat took it over in 1969, and in recent years it stopped investing in it, making it sell re-badged Chrysler models.
In 2012, Marchionne had already signaled that Lancia had no future.
"We have to be honest. Lancia will never be what it once was. The only model that is of any value in Europe is the Ypsilon, which will be saved. The rest of the range has no appeal," he said at the time.
