Opel Astra gets hot new biturbo 1.6 diesel engine

160 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

The Opel Astra is already enjoying good sales in Europe and now the German company is making it even more desirable with a new 1.6-liter biturbo diesel engine. The manufacturer says the unit is the perfect choice for customers, who like “hot chili sauce on his toast,” but behind this advertising slogan is hiding a 160-horsepower (118-kilowatt) 1.6 BiTurbo CDTI motor that consumes 58.8-57.4 miles per gallon (4.0-4.1 liters per 100 kilometers) on the NEDC combined cycle with corresponding CO2 emissions of 106-109 grams per kilometer.

Opel explains the Astra Hatch equipped with the 1.6 biturbo diesel sprints from a standstill to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 8.6 seconds, while the 50 to 75 mph (80 to 120 km/h) acceleration takes 7.5 seconds. Top speed stands at 137 mph (220 km/h).

But what’s more important for everyday use, the new engine delivers its maximum torque of 258 pound-feet (350 newton meters) at low 1,500 rpm. Combined with a low weight, the car “gains speed quickly from low rpm” and “revs smoothly and progressively up to the maximum power output at 4,000 rpm.”

At least for now, the four-cylinder 1.6 BiTurbo engine with sequential, two-stage turbocharging will be offered exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox. When equipped with the new engine, the European Car of the Year will be available at $31,124 (€ 27,310) in Germany. The new diesel will be offered only for the Astra Hatch, but we expect it to join the Astra Sports Tourer range soon.
