Norway significantly reduces incentives to buy electrics and taxes them
https://www.nettavisen.no/okonomi/na-ko ... -95-686476

Norway has been promoting electric mobility for years by offering significant incentives for their purchase. You see the country's government had decided that electric car owners would not pay 25% VAT on the purchase of an electric car, be exempted from almost all taxes and fees, be exempted from paying tolls and parking and also be able to use the public transport lanes and emergency lanes.

The above measures resulted in electric car sales skyrocketing and today almost 78% of new cars sold in the country are purely electric, 17% are hybrids, 2% have petrol engines and 3% with they have diesel engines.

The Norwegian government has set a goal that by 2025 all new vehicles sold in the country will be electric, hydrogen or low-emission plug-in hybrids.

However, the tax reliefs are now significantly reduced since in the 2023 budget the government includes the reinstatement of the 25% VAT for electric cars whose price exceeds 500,000 kroner (47,920 euros). This means that a car worth 50,000 euros will now cost 62,500 euros

In addition, electric vehicle owners will have to pay a weight tax from 2023 of 12.5 kroner (1.2 euros) per kilogram. This tax has until now only been levied on cars powered by petrol and diesel (including hybrids). The tax will apply after the first 500 kg, which means that a car weighing around 1,900 kg will pay around 17,500 kroner (1,676 euros). The tax is paid only once, when buying the car.

At the same time, the Norwegian government is increasing the weight and NOx tax by 2.8% and the CO2 tax by 23.4% on all cars with internal combustion engines, making cars that use petrol and diesel significantly more expensive.

The weight tax credit on plug-in hybrids will be cut from 15% to 10%, with the government warning it will be phased out.

Also drivers of electric cars will pay 70% of the value of the toll. Today companies buying electric cars were taxed on 80% of them, but from 2023 they will be taxed on 100%.

A used or imported electric car is currently cheaper to register than a petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid car, but from 2023 this will change and electrics will pay the same, with the amount affected by how old it is is the car (the older, the lower the cost).

All of the above measures aim to add several billion euros to Norway's state coffers each year.

Up to 384 new mines will be needed to meet battery demand by 2035
https://www.benchmarkminerals.com/membe ... d-by-2035/

The auto industry is turning to electrification, but already demand for raw materials and metals used to make electric vehicle batteries, such as graphite, lithium, cobalt and nickel, is outstripping supply.

According to Benchmark analysts , between 336 and 384 new mines for graphite, lithium, nickel and cobalt are needed to meet demand by 2035, based on average mine sizes in each industry, or the transition to electric vehicles will be indefinitely transitory as automakers scramble to source metals to make batteries.

If automakers and state governments want to reach a future of zero emissions from new cars, by 2035 at the latest, they will need to open at least 74 lithium mines, 62 cobalt mines, 72 nickel mines, 97 natural graphite mines and 54 factories synthetic graphite.

In 2022, global lithium supply was 747,000 tons, but analysts say demand will increase to 4.4 million tons by the end of 2035. It is worth noting that global lithium reserves stand at 14 million tons, according to estimates by Volkswagen.

Australia is currently the largest supplier of ore-mined lithium, harvested from spodumene rock at more than 13 mines. Australia will dominate the lithium trade for the next ten years, with China dominating lithium processing. There are currently more than 13 lithium mines in Australia mining spodumene rocks containing lithium, and over 75% is refined in China.

The US no longer wants to rely on China for lithium, so it plans to start its own mining and processing projects. Given the sheer number of mines required, the US may have the opportunity to open one or two or more. Exactly how many new lithium mines there will be in the US is not yet clear. Since lithium mines take at least five years to build, these mines should be operational by 2033.

There are currently more than 70 graphite mines operating worldwide, with most located in China and Africa. Natural graphite is commonly mixed with synthetic graphite in Li-ion battery anodes.

Current lithium-ion battery recycling has focused on the recovery of battery cathode materials rather than the anode, but recycling projects are beginning to discuss the recovery of anode materials as well. Recycling and recovery of graphite is required to reduce dependence on mined materials.

For synthetic graphite, which is produced using coke or coal tar, a total of 54 plants will need to be built by 2035. However, if the amount of silicon added to the battery rise increases more than Benchmark expects , then the number of new graphite mines needed will be less.

Recycling is expected to have the biggest impact on cobalt mining, as with the projected recycled quantities, the number of new mines needed will drop from 62 to 38.
